The project engages the participants to diligently design a dynamic urban or peri-urban housing scheme with an innovative construction system using Cross Laminated Timber (CLT). It is dedicated to exploring the potential of cross laminated timber as a durable building material, aligning with the developmental goals of urban housing, a pivotal pursuit of the Indian Government. The primary objective of the competition is to cultivate consciousness and propagate Cross Laminated Timber as a paramount building component for the forthcoming era of housing in India. The conceptualization involves a design approach rooted in systematic methodologies, aiming to enhance Housing Architecture in India, rendering it more sustainable, verdant, expedient, and straightforward to fabricate. This endeavor was crafted for a competition hosted by Aakar architects.

Promoting the essence of community living, the design took shape with accidental interaction spaces like ‘aangans’ at core. These Aangans appeared as these CLT units were stacked and cantilevered, thanks to its shear load transfer nature, this helped to get an element that blurred the lines between public and private. With such liminal spaces, units were placed in such a sectional language that it overlooked these front yards (aangans) in the north and created a pattern of overhangs at the south overlooking a shaded landscaped area. To create CLT, lumber boards that have been trimmed and kiln-dried are glued atop one another in layers, crosswise, with the grain of each layer facing against the grain of the layer adjacent. Stacking boards together this way can create large slabs, up to a foot thick and as large as 18-feet-long by 98-feet-wide, though the average is something more like 10 by 40.
At the drawing board itself, the design was ideated to be flexible and adapt to changing time. With incremental living as a thought, the intervention houses a structural bridge that serves as a stability member support and also makes the building ready for future, as technology advancement could help this material reach new heights. The unique characteristic of this material helped to achieve a form for the units that could be strategically cantilevered. This cantilevered arrangement were explored to analyze shaded areas and aangans of the housing typology. As explained here, the cantilevered units are strategically placed with respect to the Shear CLT panels. Primary and secondary elements are identified and are thoroughly analyzed for an efficient load transfer.
CLT construction is a zero carbon footprint type of construction, hence it was ideated to provide efficient thermal comfort too. With this goal, the massing took shape where the units were cantilevered developing a pattern, which also by radiant mapping shows helps in making the building much cooler inside and doesn’t leave these CLT panels exposed to weather. These unit’s arrangement provided spaces to be used as a threshold between two neighbors. Reminiscent of a chawl, here the aangan was opened to a narrow but long passage, creating an activity magnet to give more opportunities for people to meet. These units and activity generators are ideated to be in CLT, supported by concrete cores at both the ends.
